The operation is part of the Service’s statutory mandate to suppress smuggling and enforce trade regulations.
The Command confirmed the loss of life in the incident and extended condolences to the family of the deceased, emphasizing its commitment to conducting enforcement operations with responsibility and professionalism.
A thorough investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances of the incident, including an audit of the actions of officers Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel, to verify compliance with the Nigeria Customs Service’s strict Rules of Engagement (ROE).
The Service called for a harmonized and objective inquiry alongside the police, taking into account all forensic evidence, including the source of the discharged ammunition.
The Command also urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could create tension between security agencies or within communities.
“The outcome of this investigation will guide necessary actions in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
