The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has arrested suspected illegal National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment operators in Gwagwalada and other locations as part of efforts to curb unauthorised enrolment, illegal data modification and extortion.

The Commission also seized equipment allegedly used by the operators during an enforcement exercise conducted by its Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit.

This was disclosed in a statement by NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke.

According to the statement, the Director-General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, has reiterated the Commission’s zero tolerance for extortion and other unethical practices in the NIN enrolment process.

The Commission warned that NIN enrolment must be conducted only at approved centres, while requests for changes to personal data must be processed through its authorised self-service platform.

It urged NIN holders to avoid unauthorised operators and use only approved channels for enrolment and data modification.

NIMC also encouraged members of the public to download the NINAuth application, which provides additional security features, including NIN protection and access to NIN slip printing.

The Commission advised members of the public seeking enquiries or further information to contact it through its toll-free line: 0800 0616 462.

The enforcement exercise forms part of NIMC’s efforts to protect the integrity of the national identity database and prevent the activities of individuals operating outside its authorised enrolment framework.
