Nigerians on social media have expressed disappointment and frustration following the Super Eagles’ 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match on Tuesday.

The match was played at the 24 de Setembro National Stadium in Bissau, where the hosts secured a convincing victory over Nigeria.

Franculino Djú opened the scoring for Guinea-Bissau in the first half after receiving an assist from Renato Nhaga.

Mama Baldé doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 65th minute before Álvaro Djaló completed the scoring with a stoppage-time goal.

The defeat triggered strong reactions from Nigerian football supporters on X, with several fans questioning the performance of the players and the decisions of the technical crew.

Reacting to the result, X user @akwaibomdaily criticised several players, saying only Calvin Bassey showed sufficient commitment.

“The only serious footballer in the Super Eagles is Bassey. Nwabali, Bruno, Moses and Ajayi are very unserious players,” the user posted.

Another user, @_AbiolaPharays, expressed frustration but urged supporters not to give up on the team’s qualification hopes.

“It is the duty of the Super Eagles to always make us sad. It isn’t time to bring our calculators out because there are still matches to play,” the user wrote.

@Habatovation1 questioned the quality of the team despite Nigeria’s position in the FIFA rankings.

“It’s not by FIFA ranking but by quality football,” the user said, adding a disparaging description of the national team.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was among the players criticised following the defeat.

@akwaibomdaily called for the coaching staff to consider dropping the goalkeeper, while @Trinityter77 went further, saying Nwabali should no longer be invited to the national team.

Meanwhile, @GodwinsOE called for greater scrutiny of Ademola Lookman’s recent performances for both club and country.

“We need to have a serious Ademola Lookman discussion. He has been poor for both club and country lately. At some point, we need to stop making excuses and address his performances,” the user posted.

Some supporters also questioned the performance of the players rather than placing the blame entirely on the coaching staff.

@sportingshina argued that players should also be held accountable for repeated poor displays in the national team.

“Most times, Super Eagles coaches take the blame for poor performances, but I think it’s high time the players were held accountable too for consistently failing to give their best in national colours,” the user wrote.

Another supporter, @sorungbefaith, criticised several players and questioned the coach’s continued reliance on them.

“Eric Chelle trusting players because they started his tenure will cost him his job,” the user said, before listing several players he believed should not be in the squad.

The scale of the defeat also drew blunt reactions from some supporters.

@Elishama described the Super Eagles as “a total disgrace,” while @BukolaOfGod questioned why Nigeria’s players, despite featuring for leading clubs, have struggled to reproduce that form for the national team.

“What exactly is going on?” the user asked.

The defeat has consequently intensified discussions among Nigerian football supporters over the Super Eagles’ performances, player selection and the direction of the team under coach Eric Chelle.
