Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as “politically lazy” over their opposition to his Rainbow Coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wike made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Tuesday.

The former Rivers State governor was reacting to the position of APC governors, led by their chairman and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, that they would neither participate in, support nor endorse any political alliance capable of undermining President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid or affecting APC candidates at any level.

Wike, however, argued that his decision to support President Tinubu did not amount to abandoning his political party or preventing other political parties from fielding candidates in the 2027 elections.

Reacting to the governors’ position, Wike said, “They are politically lazy. When you have your local problems, don’t use Mr President as your excuse.”

The FCT minister maintained that the disagreements surrounding his political activities did not begin with his decision to support Tinubu.

According to him, he had faced opposition from some political actors while serving as governor of Rivers State and later as Minister of the FCT.

“This thing did not start today. It started at a ministerial position. They were not happy that I was Minister of FCT. Also, they were unhappy when I was governor,” he said.

Wike further stated that his understanding of the political situation was based on information that may not be available to those criticising his activities.

He suggested that his critics would have a better understanding of his position if they had access to the same information available to him.

The disagreement comes as political alignments and coalition-building intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with various political actors positioning themselves and their allies for the contest.
