The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has commissioned and handed over three rehabilitated 100-bed capacity wards at the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives aimed at improving healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
The intervention, carried out through the NNPC Foundation Ltd./Gte., the CSR arm of NNPC Limited, involved the rehabilitation and upgrade of Wards G, H, and J, bringing the total improved capacity to 300 beds.
The project included the installation of new hospital beds and a central medical gas system to improve the standard of care for patients. It also covered the replacement of roofing and ceilings, upgrade of electrical and mechanical systems, and installation of new vinyl floors across the three wards.

Before the intervention, the affected wards were reportedly in poor condition, limiting their functionality and reducing the hospital’s ability to provide adequate in-patient care.
Speaking during the commissioning and handover ceremony, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of NNPC Limited, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, said the company’s definition of profitability extends beyond revenue generation and increased production to include its social impact on Nigerians.
Ojulari, who was represented by the Chief Financial Officer, Mr Adedapo Segun, said NNPC was proud of the rehabilitation because of its far-reaching benefits to public health.
He noted that the project reflected the company’s commitment to supporting national development through strategic social investments.
Also speaking, the Managing Director of NNPC Foundation, Mrs Emmanuella Arukwe, said the intervention was part of efforts to strengthen critical healthcare infrastructure and improve access to quality medical services.
She said the National Orthopedic Hospital had served Nigerians for decades and deserved support that would enhance its service delivery.
“Beyond the immediate benefits, this effort reflects the role NNPC Foundation plays as the social impact arm of NNPC Limited.
“Our focus remains on practical interventions that improve lives and align with national priorities in healthcare,” she said.
The Medical Director of the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Dr Wakeel Lawal, said the hospital management had approached the NNPC Foundation due to the poor state of the wards and the urgent need for intervention.
He expressed appreciation to NNPC Limited for responding positively and delivering what he described as a world-class transformation.
According to him, the project has brought the wards to international standards and restored hope to both patients and healthcare workers.
“What NNPC Limited has done goes beyond rehabilitation; it represents a renewal of hope,” Lawal said.

The event was attended by the Executive Vice President, Business Services, NNPC Ltd., Mrs Sophia Mbakwe, alongside traditional representatives and stakeholders from the host community.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by the GCEO’s representative, accompanied by the hospital’s Chief Medical Director and H.R.H. Alhaji Rodiyallahu Alabi Yunusa, Baale of Bajulaiye Community in Somolu, who represented the Oba of Somolu, HRM Oba Kazeem Bashua.
