The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has extended its petrol sales discount across its retail stations nationwide until October 31, 2026, as the Federal Government seeks to cushion the impact of elevated global crude oil prices on Nigerian households and businesses.

The national oil company said the initiative, initially introduced on October 1 to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, would continue for the rest of the month following renewed efforts to provide relief to consumers amid rising domestic petrol prices.

NNPC Ltd, in a statement issued on Friday by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s efforts to ease the economic pressure on Nigerians arising from higher global crude oil prices linked to the conflict in the Middle East.

The extension follows a statement by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, on October 8, 2026, concerning measures to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices on households, businesses and the wider economy.

The company said it recognised the effect of higher petrol prices on transportation costs, business operations and household spending, noting that the discount was designed to provide direct relief to customers during the period of heightened global market uncertainty.

“We understand the strain on families and livelihoods, and this discount is intended to provide direct relief to customers during this difficult period,” the company stated.

The oil company, however, stressed that the extension should not be interpreted as a return to the petrol subsidy regime.

According to NNPC Ltd, the discount is strictly a customer relief initiative applicable to its retail outlets and does not amount to the restoration of government-funded petroleum subsidies.

It also clarified that the initiative does not establish a uniform national petrol pump price or change the market-based pricing framework governing petroleum products.

The clarification comes amid sustained public concern over petrol prices and their implications for transportation fares, food costs, production expenses and general living standards.

By distinguishing the discount from a subsidy, NNPC Ltd said it intended to provide practical support to consumers while maintaining commercially responsible operations.

Global Oil Prices Put Pressure on Consumers

The company attributed the pressure on domestic petrol prices to elevated international crude oil prices arising from the conflict in the Middle East.

Higher crude oil prices can increase the cost of petroleum products, with implications for fuel marketers, transport operators, manufacturers and households.

In Nigeria, petrol price movements also influence the cost of moving goods and people, making fuel pricing a major factor in inflationary pressures and business operating expenses.

NNPC Ltd said its initiative was part of a broader effort to work with the government and other stakeholders to reduce the burden on consumers while ensuring reliable product supply.

However, the company did not disclose the specific discount per litre or indicate whether the initiative would be extended beyond October 31.

The company reiterated its commitment to maintaining a reliable supply of petroleum products and improving customer service across its retail network.

It urged Nigerians to disregard claims suggesting that the discount represented a reversal of the government’s petroleum pricing policy.

NNPC Ltd also pledged to communicate the scope and duration of its customer initiatives clearly to enable consumers to make informed purchasing decisions.

The extension provides temporary price relief to customers buying petrol at participating NNPC Retail stations, although the actual benefit will depend on the discount offered at the outlets.

With the initiative scheduled to run until October 31, consumers will continue to access the reduced-price offer at NNPC Retail stations nationwide during the remainder of the month.

The company said it appreciated Nigerians’ continued patronage and remained committed to supporting government efforts to ease economic pressures without abandoning commercially responsible operations.
