The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has received a digital platform designed to strengthen methane emissions monitoring, improve environmental compliance and enhance regulatory oversight across Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

The platform, known as the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Emission Tracker (NOGIET), integrates satellite methane detections, facility information, regulatory mapping and verified emissions data into a single web-based application.

The Executive Director, Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC), Dr Mustapha Lamorde, received the platform on behalf of the Authority Chief Executive, Mallam Rabiu Abdullahi Umar.

NOGIET was developed through the Stakeholder Democracy Network (SDN), with support from the Global Methane Hub (GMH), in collaboration with the NMDPRA and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

The digital application is expected to provide the NMDPRA with improved capacity to identify methane emission hotspots, prioritise regulatory inspections, monitor emissions trends and implement targeted interventions to reduce methane pollution.

The initiative is also designed to strengthen regulatory coordination between the NMDPRA and NUPRC, while promoting measurement-based emissions reporting and more effective environmental regulation across the petroleum industry.

As part of efforts to ensure effective deployment, a two-day onboarding and User Acceptance Test (UAT) was conducted on October 22 and 23, 2026, with participation from the NMDPRA’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) team.

Initial feedback from the exercise indicated satisfaction with the application’s performance, particularly its integration with the Authority’s existing digital platform.

Under the handover arrangements, the complete application, including backend access, configurations and source code, will be transferred to the NMDPRA to guarantee institutional ownership, maintenance and future development.

The SDN and GMH have also expressed their willingness to provide continued technical support at no cost, alongside access to satellite data facilitated by the project partners.

The development is expected to improve the availability and use of reliable emissions data in regulatory decision-making, enabling the Authority to identify areas requiring urgent attention and strengthen compliance monitoring.

The initiative underscores the NMDPRA’s efforts to leverage technology, institutional collaboration and data-driven regulation to improve environmental protection and promote responsible operations across Nigeria’s petroleum industry.
