The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has been named Maritime Agency of the Year 2025 in recognition of its significant progress in enhancing safety across Nigeria’s inland waterways, including a reported 70 percent reduction in boat mishaps.
The honour was presented at the 2025 award and dinner night organised by New Telegraph, held at the Lagos Oriental Hotel.
The award was received by Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Umar Yusuf Girei, who dedicated the recognition to the agency’s staff and former Managing Director, Bola Oyebamiji.
Speaking to journalists after the ceremony, Girei described the award as a validation of the authority’s commitment to improving maritime safety nationwide.
He added that the recognition would motivate the agency’s workforce to intensify efforts toward safer water transportation.
According to NIWA, the award highlights its initiatives to strengthen safety and security on Nigerian inland waterways. Key measures include the implementation of the Inland Waterways Transportation Code and the deployment of water marshals tasked with enforcing compliance with safety regulations.
The authority noted that the achievements recorded in 2025 reflect a broader strategy aimed at reducing accidents, protecting passengers, and fostering greater confidence in water travel as a viable transport option.
The recognition underscores the growing importance of regulatory oversight in Nigeria’s maritime sector, particularly as authorities seek to curb avoidable tragedies and modernise water transport systems.
