The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has advanced its planned acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters from Bell Textron in the United States, in a move aimed at expanding Nigeria’s air combat and security capabilities.

The latest development followed a beam signing ceremony held at Bell Textron’s facility in Amarillo, Texas, as part of the Nigeria-United States Government defence cooperation programme.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, led the Nigerian delegation to the ceremony.

According to the Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF Headquarters, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the programme forms part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to modernise the Armed Forces and strengthen the country’s defence architecture.

Speaking at the ceremony, Aneke said the acquisition would contribute to improving the operational effectiveness of the Nigerian military.

He said the AH-1Z Viper programme was an important milestone in the NAF’s efforts to develop a more capable and mission-ready force.

“The acquisition of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters represents an important milestone in our continuing efforts to build a more capable, professional and mission-ready Nigerian Air Force,” Aneke said.

The Chief of the Air Staff said the programme was consistent with his command philosophy of maintaining a highly motivated and professional force capable of delivering airpower effects in coordination with surface forces.

He also stressed the need to ensure that the capabilities being acquired translate into improved operational effectiveness in support of Nigeria’s national security objectives.

During the visit, the NAF delegation inspected the AH-1Z Viper production line at the Bell Textron facility.

Aneke expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for what he described as strategic leadership and continued support for strengthening Nigeria’s defence and security architecture.

He also acknowledged the cooperation of the United States Government, Bell Textron, Programme Management Air 276 and other stakeholders involved in the programme.

According to the Air Chief, sustained defence cooperation, technical collaboration and capability development would remain important to the successful implementation of the acquisition programme.

The latest development comes less than a week after the Nigerian Air Force took delivery of five new helicopters as part of the government’s airpower modernisation efforts.

The platforms comprise three AW-109 Trekker B helicopters manufactured by Leonardo Helicopters of Italy and two H-125 helicopters manufactured by Airbus Helicopters.

The recent deliveries, together with the planned AH-1Z Viper acquisition, form part of ongoing efforts to expand the Nigerian Air Force’s aviation fleet and enhance its capacity to respond to security challenges.

The Federal Government and NAF have continued to pursue equipment acquisitions and international defence partnerships as part of efforts to modernise the Armed Forces and strengthen Nigeria’s national security capabilities.
