Lagos faces imminent blackout as Egbin power station shuts down, transmission line fails

A prolonged blackout may be looming in Lagos State following the sudden shutdown of the Egbin Power Station and a simultaneous outage on a major transmission line supplying the state.

The development has triggered a significant reduction in electricity generation, worsening power supply challenges across Nigeria, with the Lagos region expected to be the hardest hit.

Egbin Power Station, the largest electricity-generating plant connected to the national grid and a major contributor to daily electricity supply nationwide, suffered a major operational disturbance late on April 28, 2026.

At approximately 8:21 p.m., the station recorded a total loss of generation, with output dropping sharply from about 641 megawatts to zero.

According to reports, the incident was caused by the failure of the plant’s central compressor, alongside a malfunction in the circulating water pump system, forcing operators to immediately shut down all generating units to protect the facility from further damage.

The generation collapse has significantly reduced available power on the national grid, raising concerns over an extended blackout in Lagos and surrounding areas.

The situation was further worsened by a transmission constraint affecting power delivery into the Lagos load centre.

Authorities disclosed that electricity supply to Lagos is also being restricted by the forced outage of the Osogbo–Ikeja West 330kV transmission line, which has limited the evacuation of available generation into the state.

The combined effect of the Egbin shutdown and the transmission line failure has heightened fears of prolonged outages for homes, businesses, and industries in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub.

Energy stakeholders are closely monitoring the situation, as efforts are expected to be intensified to restore generation and stabilize supply to prevent a deeper power crisis.
