Troops of the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with the Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Police Force and local security groups, have rescued all 16 persons abducted by suspected kidnappers in Kogi State.
The victims were kidnapped on Sunday, August 9, 2026, when armed criminals attacked commuters along the Ojuwo–Ajengo–Memarebo and Ojiwo–Itobe roads in Ofu Local Government Area of the state.
Following credible intelligence that the victims had been moved towards Adumu Community in Dekina Local Government Area, troops of 21 Battalion and personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Lugard launched a joint search-and-rescue operation with the police, vigilantes and local hunters.
The security team subsequently made contact with the fleeing kidnappers, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.
According to the Nigerian Army, the kidnappers were overwhelmed by the superior firepower and coordinated assault of the security forces and abandoned all 16 victims before fleeing into the surrounding forest with gunshot wounds.
The rescued victims comprised six adult males, six adult females and four children.
The Army said the victims are currently undergoing documentation and medical assessment before being reunited with their families.
However, a local hunter who participated in the operation was killed during the encounter, while a police officer sustained injuries and is receiving medical treatment.
The Army commended the bravery of the deceased hunter and the injured police officer, describing their actions as a demonstration of commitment to protecting civilians.
