The Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD), has called on Nigerians to deepen their commitment to democratic values by embracing active civic participation, inclusion, and national unity as the country celebrates Democracy Day 2026.
In a goodwill message commemorating the June 12 celebration, AKOD paid glowing tribute to the heroes and heroines of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, noting that their sacrifices laid the foundation for the freedoms and democratic governance Nigerians enjoy today.
He stressed that democracy extends beyond the electoral process, describing it as a system that thrives on accountability, inclusiveness, and the active involvement of citizens in governance.
According to him, every Nigerian has a role to play in shaping the nation’s future and should be given equal opportunities to contribute regardless of age, gender, religion, ethnicity, or social standing.
“Democracy is not merely about elections; it is about participation, inclusion, accountability, and ensuring that every citizen has a voice in shaping our collective future,” he stated.
