The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Oyo/Osun Area Command, has intensified efforts to curb smuggling and promote lawful trade through strengthened collaboration with traditional institutions in Oyo State.

The Acting Customs Area Controller of the Command, DC Wale Moses Adewole, led a delegation on a familiarisation visit to the palaces of the Onigbeti of Igbeti, the Iba of Kishi, and the Okere of Saki on Wednesday.

At Igbeti, the Onigbeti, Oba Engr. Bashir Olalekan, commended the Nigeria Customs Service for its role in revenue generation, trade facilitation, and border protection.

He pledged the community’s continued support, particularly in sensitising residents on the dangers and economic implications of smuggling.

In response, Adewole appreciated the warm reception and lauded the community’s cooperation with Customs officers.

He stressed the need for sustained partnership to enhance operational efficiency, discourage youth involvement in illegal trade, and address social challenges such as drug abuse.

During his visit to Kishi, Adewole reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with the community.

He commended local efforts in rice production and discouraged the smuggling of foreign parboiled rice, noting the presence of a functional rice mill in the area.

The Iba of Kishi, Oba Dr. Masoud Lawal Oyekola Aweda, welcomed the delegation and assured the Customs Service of the community’s commitment to promoting lawful trade and discouraging illegal activities that could hinder economic growth.

At Saki, the Okere, Oba Dr. (Surv) Khalid Oyeniyi Olabisi Ayinla, highlighted the importance of traditional institutions in maintaining peace and order.
