The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adeniyi, has pledged to construct a multimedia resource centre and establish a campus radio station for the Nigerian Institute of Journalism.
Adeniyi made the commitment on Wednesday in Lagos during his acceptance speech after being conferred with a fellowship award at the institute’s special convocation.
The event attracted academics, media professionals, alumni and students, celebrating contributions to journalism, education and national development.
“I hereby commit to construct and deliver a two-storey building to house a multimedia resource centre for the institute,” Adeniyi said, adding that construction would commence once necessary approvals are secured.
He explained that the proposed facility would provide students with hands-on training aligned with global media standards, enabling them to integrate text, images, audio, video and animation in their work.
According to him, the centre would include production studios, modern classrooms, digital laboratories, offices and collaborative spaces for academic staff.
He noted that the project would bridge the gap between theory and practice, equipping graduates for the demands of a rapidly evolving media landscape.
Adeniyi also pledged to establish a campus-based radio station with appropriate transmission equipment to support practical training in broadcasting, reporting, editing and programme management.
“It is now time to bring this platform home. The new centre will provide a dedicated space, and an appropriate transmitter suitable for the station’s terrestrial licence will be provided,” he said.
The Customs boss said the initiative formed part of the service’s broader corporate social responsibility efforts, stressing its commitment to education and youth development.
Reflecting on his time as a student, Adeniyi recalled enrolling at the institute in 1989, noting that the NIJ shaped his professional values and career path.
“This institution instilled in me professionalism, discipline and continuous self-development,” he said, describing the fellowship as a “full-circle moment.”
He urged students to remain committed to innovation, ethical standards and personal growth, adding that stakeholders must provide practical opportunities to empower future generations.
Conferring the award, Governing Council Chairman, Olusegun Osoba, said the fellowship recognised Adeniyi’s outstanding contributions to public service and national development.
“By the authority of the Academic Board and Governing Council, I confer on you the fellowship of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism,” Osoba said.

He added that the honour followed years of deliberation and was based strictly on merit.
Also speaking, NIJ Provost, Gbenga Adefaye, commended Adeniyi’s leadership and dedication to education and professionalism.
He noted that the Comptroller-General’s achievements reflect discipline, vision and commitment to national development.
The ceremony featured a presentation of a framed portrait to Adeniyi by NIJ alumni, symbolising appreciation for his accomplishments and enduring ties to the institute.
