Nigerian international and Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman is on the brink of completing a sensational €40 million transfer to Spanish La Liga giants Atlético Madrid.
Despite a late and lucrative push from Turkish side Fenerbahçe, Lookman has prioritised a move to Spain, keen on working under Diego Simeone and testing himself in La Liga.
The deal reached a breakthrough on Saturday night and will see the 28-year-old Nigerian attacker move to the Civitas Metropolitano in a transfer package valued at €40m.
Atlético Madrid and Atalanta have reportedly agreed on a structure comprising a €35m fixed fee, with an additional €5m in performance-related add-ons.
Lookman has also finalised personal terms with Atlético, agreeing to a long-term contract following late-night discussions.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the development on Sunday, revealing that a verbal agreement has been reached between both clubs and that formal steps are now underway.
“With verbal agreement on a €40m deal. Formal steps expected today then… here we go,” Romano posted on X, signalling that the transfer is close to completion.
Although Fenerbahçe were prepared to offer a higher salary, Lookman made it clear that Atlético Madrid was his preferred destination, underlining his ambition to compete at the highest level in Spain.
