Nigeria is set to deepen its health-sector cooperation with China as the Chinese Navy Hospital Ship, Auspicious Ark, prepares to visit Lagos from November 10 to 17, 2026, for proposed humanitarian medical activities.**
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, said the planned visit would strengthen bilateral relations through humanitarian medical services, professional knowledge exchange and closer collaboration between healthcare professionals in both countries.
Pate spoke during an interagency coordination meeting on the ship’s visit in Abuja, describing the initiative as an important step towards expanding health cooperation and people-to-people engagement between Nigeria and China.
The hospital ship, identified as Auspicious Ark (Hull 868), is expected to provide opportunities for medical services and knowledge sharing, with relevant federal and state authorities working together to coordinate the planned mission.
According to the minister, the engagement would promote mutual learning and create opportunities for healthcare professionals from both countries to exchange expertise and strengthen professional relationships.
He said the Federal Government remained committed to ensuring the safety and effectiveness of the planned medical interventions.
Pate commended the Lagos State Government for its preparations ahead of the ship’s scheduled arrival, stressing the importance of coordination among relevant authorities to ensure the smooth implementation of the activities.
He said the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and other stakeholders were aligned on the necessary arrangements for the visit.
The interagency meeting is expected to support coordination among the institutions involved in preparing for the mission, including arrangements relating to the delivery of medical services and the participation of relevant health professionals.
The minister reiterated that the health and well-being of Nigerians remained a priority across all levels of the healthcare system.

The planned visit forms part of broader engagement between Nigeria and China, with health cooperation providing an avenue for humanitarian assistance, professional exchanges and institutional collaboration.
Hospital ships can serve as platforms for delivering medical services and facilitating the exchange of clinical knowledge, depending on the scope of their missions and the arrangements agreed upon with host authorities.
For Nigeria, the proposed engagement could provide opportunities for medical professionals to interact with their Chinese counterparts while supporting cooperation between healthcare institutions.
However, the specific medical services to be offered during the visit, the beneficiaries and the arrangements for accessing treatment were not detailed in the statement.
Pate expressed optimism that the engagement would strengthen bilateral health relations and promote mutual learning, while reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests and well-being of Nigerians.
The Auspicious Ark is scheduled to arrive in Lagos on November 10 and remain until November 17, 2026, subject to the planned programme and operational arrangements.
