The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raided the International Trade Fair Complex in Lagos, uncovering an alleged large-scale counterfeit alcoholic beverage operation and seizing products valued at more than ₦2 billion.
The agency disclosed that operatives from its Investigation and Enforcement Directorate carried out the raid on Tuesday following credible intelligence about illegal activities concealed in makeshift stores used as parking spaces within the complex.
According to NAFDAC, the operation led to the discovery of more than 20 illegal stores allegedly involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit and unsafe alcoholic beverages.
The agency said its operatives found suspects allegedly blending counterfeit versions of popular alcoholic beverage brands, revalidating expired and unsafe drinks for resale, and stockpiling banned imported products.
Two suspects were arrested during the enforcement operation, while the seized products were evacuated from the premises.
NAFDAC did not disclose the identities of the suspects or provide further details about the brands and quantities of the products recovered.
The operation forms part of NAFDAC’s enforcement efforts against counterfeit, expired and unregistered products that could pose risks to consumers.

The alleged practice of revalidating expired beverages for resale raises concerns about product safety, while counterfeit alcoholic drinks may expose consumers to substances that have not undergone the required regulatory checks.
The agency urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious manufacturing, product revalidation or sales activities to the appropriate authorities.
NAFDAC provided its official complaints line, 0800-1-NAFDAC (0800-1-623322), for members of the public to report suspected violations.
The agency’s latest operation highlights ongoing concerns over the circulation of counterfeit and unsafe consumer products and the need for sustained enforcement to protect public health.
