Two ministers serving under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have reportedly resigned from their positions in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
Findings by BusinessPointer indicate that the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, Yusuf Tanko Sununu, have stepped down from the Federal Executive Council to pursue elective political offices.
Tuggar, a native of Udubo in Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, is said to be eyeing the governorship seat of Bauchi State.
Meanwhile, Sununu is reportedly preparing to contest for the Kebbi South Senatorial District seat.
A statement issued by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, confirmed Tuggar’s resignation, noting that it had been formally received.
Prior to this, the Special Adviser to the minister on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, had disclosed Tuggar’s intention to run for the Bauchi governorship, adding that he would adhere to the electoral guidelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Sources within the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs also revealed that Sununu submitted his resignation letter to the Presidency earlier in the day, citing his desire to focus on his legislative ambition.
Before his ministerial appointment, Sununu served as a member of the House of Representatives, representing the Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski Federal Constituency.
His return to the electoral arena as a calculated move to strengthen grassroots support in Kebbi State, with his supporters already mobilising ahead of the polls. They believe his experience at the federal level could boost his chances and attract increased federal attention to the region if elected.

As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency has yet to announce replacements for the two ministers or indicate whether interim appointments will be made.
The resignations come amid a wave of political realignments, as several officeholders are expected to step down from executive roles to contest positions in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
