President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to developing Nigeria’s maritime sector and charged the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to intensify efforts to unlock the industry’s economic potential.

Tinubu gave the charge when he received the Director-General of NIMASA, Dr Dayo Mobereola, at the State House in Abuja, where they discussed developments and challenges within the Nigerian maritime industry.

During the meeting, Mobereola briefed the President on activities and developments within NIMASA over the past two years, highlighting the progress recorded by the agency as well as challenges confronting the sector.

Following the briefing, Tinubu said the establishment of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy was a deliberate policy initiative aimed at repositioning the maritime sector and increasing its contribution to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The President commended NIMASA for the progress recorded under its current leadership but urged Mobereola and his management team to sustain the momentum.

Tinubu’s directive underscores the Federal Government’s broader focus on leveraging Nigeria’s maritime assets to drive economic growth, investment, employment and revenue generation.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of strengthening the country’s maritime institutions as the government seeks to maximise opportunities across shipping, port operations, marine transportation and other areas of the blue economy.
