The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has directed all shipping lines and their agents to immediately suspend the implementation of recently approved tariff increases in the port and shipping sector.
The directive, issued as part of the Council’s statutory mandate as the economic regulator, follows ongoing engagements with key stakeholders and concerns over the timing, structure, and potential impact of the new tariffs on port users and the broader logistics value chain.
According to the Council, the decision to halt the implementation is aimed at safeguarding fair competition, ensuring transparency, and maintaining stability within the sector pending the outcome of comprehensive consultations and regulatory review.
The NSC further instructed all affected operators to revert to the previous tariff regime that was in place before the increase.

It warned that any deviation from the directive would be considered a breach of regulatory compliance and would attract sanctions in line with existing laws and regulations.
“The Council will, upon conclusion of stakeholder consultations and internal review processes, communicate a definitive position on the matter,” the statement said.
Reaffirming its commitment to effective economic regulation, the NSC emphasized its role in protecting cargo interests and promoting an efficient and equitable maritime transport system.
All operators were urged to ensure strict and immediate compliance with the directive.
