The Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Dr. Abba Aliyu, has lauded the appointment of former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, as chairman of the agency’s governing board, describing the move as a demonstration of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to expanding electricity access across Nigeria.

Aliyu, in a statement issued on Tuesday, also welcomed the appointment of Alhaji Ahmadu Abubakar and Engineer Ilyasu Ibrahim Makinta as non-executive directors of the board.

He commended President Tinubu for what he described as the selection of competent individuals capable of advancing the agency’s mandate of providing electricity to rural and underserved communities.

“Our visionary leader, President Tinubu, is intentional about ensuring that every Nigerian has access to reliable electricity.

With these new appointments, the President has further demonstrated his keen commitment to our success,” Aliyu said.

According to the REA chief, the experience and expertise of the newly appointed board members will play a crucial role in accelerating the agency’s efforts to bridge the electricity gap in remote communities across the country.

Aliyu specifically highlighted Fayose’s record as governor of Ekiti State, noting that his administration prioritised rural development and improved connectivity between underserved communities and urban centres through strategic infrastructure projects.

He recalled that Fayose’s tenure was marked by the construction of dual township roads, a flyover bridge, a new governor’s office complex and several markets that boosted agricultural activities and economic growth in the state.

The appointments, which take immediate effect, were announced on Monday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Under the new board structure, Fayose will serve as chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency board, while Ahmadu Abubakar and Makinta will serve as non-executive board members.

The development comes as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to improve electricity access and expand infrastructure under its rural electrification and energy transition agenda.
