The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has called for stronger partnerships with the European Union, development finance institutions and private investors to accelerate the decarbonisation of Nigeria’s railway sector and drive sustainable transportation.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, made the call while speaking at the 10th Nigeria–EU Business Forum on Sustainable Transportation and Global Gateway Opportunities for Partnerships.

Speaking on the theme, “Accelerating Nigeria’s Rail Decarbonisation Journey Through Sustainable Investments,” Opeifa described rail transportation as a strategic national asset capable of promoting economic growth, environmental sustainability, regional integration and social inclusion.

He said expanding Nigeria’s railway network would significantly reduce carbon emissions, ease pressure on highways, lower logistics costs, improve passenger mobility and stimulate industrial and commercial activities across the country.

According to him, the NRC is committed to developing a modern, efficient, safe and environmentally sustainable railway system through reforms aimed at strengthening rail infrastructure, improving operational efficiency, enhancing freight services and attracting greater private sector participation.

Opeifa noted that the European Union’s Global Gateway initiative offers a strategic opportunity to deepen cooperation between Nigeria and international partners in railway development.

He said the corporation welcomes partnerships that support railway modernisation, green technologies, renewable energy integration, digital rail systems, capacity building and innovative financing models capable of unlocking the full potential of Nigeria’s railway sector.

“Sustainable transportation is no longer an option; it is a necessity. As we work towards achieving our national development objectives and global climate commitments, investment in rail infrastructure will remain one of the most impactful decisions we can make for future generations,” he said.

The NRC boss invited investors, technology providers, development finance institutions and strategic partners to collaborate with the corporation in building a resilient, competitive and low-carbon railway network.

He added that such collaboration would accelerate Nigeria’s rail decarbonisation journey, strengthen regional connectivity, create jobs, facilitate trade and support inclusive economic development.

Opeifa also thanked the European Union, organisers of the Nigeria–EU Business Forum and other stakeholders for providing a platform to promote dialogue and collaboration on sustainable transportation.
