…Says National Grid remained stable

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has dismissed claims made by the Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC) regarding the national grid disturbance recorded on June 25, insisting that the incident was a localized voltage instability in the Lagos area and not a nationwide grid failure.

In a statement issued on Friday, NISO said the APGC’s publication contained misleading interpretations of the event and failed to accurately reflect the operational circumstances surrounding the disturbance.

The system operator stressed that, as the statutory body responsible for operating, monitoring and securing the national grid, it remains the only authorised source of official information on grid operations, system events and network performance.

According to NISO, the June 25 incident was promptly detected and effectively managed by the System Operator, preventing it from spreading beyond the Lagos region.

“The incident remained confined to the Lagos region. Through timely operational interventions and coordinated operations, the incident was successfully contained, preventing its propagation to the rest of the national grid,” the statement said.

It added that electricity supply in the affected area was progressively restored within a short period following coordinated system restoration measures.

NISO also faulted APGC’s characterisation of system frequency, voltage and generation during the disturbance, arguing that the presentation did not reflect the provisions of the Nigerian Grid Code.

The operator explained that temporary deviations in system frequency and voltage are expected during grid disturbances and are managed through established operational, protection and restoration mechanisms until normal operating conditions are restored.

It noted that the Nigerian Grid Code permits temporary frequency excursions outside the normal operating range under stressed system conditions and requires generating units to remain connected to the grid for specified periods to support system stability.

According to NISO, presenting isolated frequency and voltage readings without reference to the Grid Code and the subsequent restoration process creates a misleading impression of the system’s performance.

The operator further explained that the temporary reduction in electricity generation resulted from protective actions by generating units and deliberate emergency measures implemented to safeguard the integrity of the national grid and prevent cascading outages.

It said the swift restoration of normal operations demonstrated the effectiveness of the emergency procedures deployed during the incident.

NISO urged members of the public, market participants, policymakers and other stakeholders to rely on its official communications for verified information on national grid operations.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the reliability, security and stability of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry through strict compliance with the Nigerian Grid Code, transparent communication and internationally accepted system operation practices.
