The Federal Government of Nigeria has formalized a strategic partnership with the International Energy Agency (IEA) to enhance cooperation on methane emissions reduction, gas development, clean cooking access, and technical support.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Tuesday at the IEA Headquarters in Paris by Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), and representatives of the IEA.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Ekpo said the agreement strengthens efficiency, governance, and alignment of Nigeria’s petroleum industry with global best practices.
“This MoU marks an important milestone in our collective efforts to advance the Nigerian petroleum sector in a manner that is efficient, sustainable, and aligned with global standards,” he stated.
The framework covers methane emissions reduction, policy and analytical support, institutional and technical capacity building, data sharing, gas development, and expansion of gas infrastructure.
A key pillar is clean cooking, with the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu targeting five million homes for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) adoption by 2030.
Minister Ekpo emphasized that collaboration with the IEA will provide technical expertise and global insights to improve project bankability and accelerate infrastructure delivery.
IEA Executive Director, Dr. Fatih Birol commended Nigeria’s commitment to reducing methane emissions and expanding clean cooking gas, highlighting the partnership as a model for sustainable energy development in Africa.
