The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the timetable for the 2027 general elections, with the presidential and National Assembly elections slated for February 20, 2027, and governorship and state assembly elections scheduled for March 6, 2027.

The announcement was made during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday by INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, who confirmed that the detailed timetable has been uploaded to the Commission’s website and circulated to registered political parties and stakeholders.

“All the 36 Resident Electoral Commissioners and that of the FCT are hereby directed to publish the notices in each constituency in respect of which an election is to be held,” Amupitan said, emphasising that the commission is fully prepared for the exercise.

He noted that, under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 as amended), the tenure of the President, Vice-President, Governors, and Deputy Governors (except in certain specified states) will expire on May 28, 2027, while membership of the National and State Assemblies will stand dissolved on June 8, 2027.

The elections are constitutionally mandated to be held not earlier than 150 days and not later than 30 days before the expiration of office.

The Chairman reaffirmed INEC’s independence, stating, “Let me reiterate that the authority and power to publish the date of election is that of the Independent National Electoral Commission.”

The 2027 elections will cover the offices of President and Vice-President, Governors and Deputy Governors, Senators, House of Representatives members, and state House of Assembly members.

INEC has also confirmed that primaries, nomination submissions, and campaigns will proceed within the statutory periods set by law.

Addressing ongoing concerns, Amupitan mentioned the pending Electoral Amendment Bill in the National Assembly, acknowledging the need to enhance the electoral framework to ensure free, fair, and credible elections.

“These dates reflect our commitment to ensuring that our electoral processes are transparent, credible, and adhere to the provisions of our laws,” he said, setting the stage for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
