The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved a comprehensive restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit as part of ongoing reforms aimed at improving operational effectiveness, internal oversight, and discipline within the Nigeria Police Force.
According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Office at Force Headquarters, Abuja, the reform is intended to refocus the Unit on its core mandate, address operational inefficiencies, and reposition it as a credible internal accountability mechanism.
The restructured Unit will now focus on proactive monitoring, intelligence-driven inspections, and real-time oversight of police personnel and operations across Commands, Formations, and Departments nationwide.
As part of the changes, the IGP approved a leadership transition, appointing Deputy Commissioner of Police Aliyu Abubakar as Head of the Police Monitoring Team to oversee the revamped Unit.

Before his appointment, Abubakar served in the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in both the FCT and Rivers State Police Commands, where he was involved in high-profile investigations and contributed to efforts aimed at modernising investigative practices and improving operational efficiency.
The IGP said the reform is designed to entrench professionalism, transparency, and discipline across the Force, adding that the Monitoring Unit will play a key role in identifying lapses, enforcing standards, and ensuring accountability at all levels.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to sustained institutional reforms and the development of a more professional and citizen-focused policing system across the country.
