The House of Representatives of Nigeria has scheduled an emergency sitting for Tuesday, February 17, 2026, to review issues arising from the recent announcement of the 2027 General Election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The decision was communicated to lawmakers through an internal memorandum issued by the Office of the Speaker late Friday, highlighting the constitutional and national importance of the development and the need for prompt legislative attention.

INEC has fixed the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls are slated for March 6, 2027.

In a statement, the House explained that the emergency sitting underscores its determination to respond swiftly to matters with far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s democratic process.

“Deliberations will focus on relevant legislative matters connected to the announcement, in line with the constitutional responsibilities of the National Assembly,” the statement read.

“All legislative business relating to the matter is expected to be addressed expeditiously. Honourable Members have been strongly advised to prioritise attendance, given the importance of the issues under consideration.”

The House reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democratic institutions through responsive and responsible lawmaking, assuring Nigerians that it would continue to act in the best interest of the country on critical national matters.
