The Federal Government has commenced the full rehabilitation and expansion of the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Road, a critical traffic corridor in Lagos State, with authorities projecting completion within four months.
The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mr. Olufemi Dare, disclosed this on Wednesday while briefing journalists at the project site, noting that the road spans from Ile Zik in Ikeja designated as chainage zero to Owode before Iyana-Logo near the Ogun State boundary.
According to Dare, the 22-kilometre project will involve a combination of flexible and rigid pavements to enhance durability and accommodate rising traffic volumes.
“Out of the 22 kilometres, about five kilometres will be constructed using rigid pavement, which is concrete, while the remaining sections will be done with asphalt,” he said.
He explained that the expansion would widen the road from approximately 12 metres to 15 metres, with shoulders extended by about three metres and built using Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP).
To improve safety along the busy corridor, Dare revealed that three pedestrian bridges would be constructed at Dopemu, Iyana-Ipaja, and Kola, while a culvert would be installed around Kilometre 10 to enhance drainage.
He assured residents that the expansion would not affect existing buildings and confirmed that milling of the current asphalt pavement was already underway. Following the milling process, a 50mm compacted asphalt overlay will be applied to rehabilitated sections.
Dare added that the contractor, Laralek Construction Company Ltd., has mobilised to multiple segments of the road, with concrete works progressing in some areas as asphalt milling continues in others.
Appealing for patience from motorists during the construction period, the controller also commended the Lagos State Government for its support, particularly praising the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority for deploying about 15 officers daily to manage traffic on the busy route.
He reassured residents and road users that the entire project, including the pedestrian bridges, would be delivered within the four-month timeline.
