A coalition of civil society organisations under the aegis of the Coalition for Good Governance (CGG) has called on the Lagos State Government not to rescind its decision to clear buildings erected under high-tension power lines in Makoko, while also demanding the immediate implementation of a comprehensive development plan for the waterfront settlement.

Addressing journalists in Lagos on Wednesday, the group described the situation as another phase in the long-standing tensions between the government and residents of Makoko, a community that has repeatedly faced demolition exercises over safety and environmental concerns.Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway

The coalition acknowledged the hardship and loss of livelihoods resulting from the demolitions but urged residents and the public not to approach the matter sentimentally, warning that ignoring safety violations could lead to catastrophic consequences. It recalled that parts of Makoko were previously demolished in 2005 and 2012 as part of government efforts to address threats to public safety.

According to the group, Makoko has remained one of Lagos’ most controversial urban spaces, often cited by city planners as evidence of planning challenges. With an estimated population ranging between 80,000 and 250,000 residents living largely in stilted wooden structures over the lagoon, the community faces limited access to sanitation, potable water, electricity and waste management, while many inhabitants depend on artisanal fishing and informal trade for survival.

The coalition noted that successive administrations in Lagos have consistently described Makoko as an environmental and security risk due to flooding, fire hazards, unplanned structures and habitation under high-tension electricity lines, stressing that regulatory concerns raised by authorities are valid and require corrective action.Lagos extends free eye screening, health checks to NDLEA officers

However, the group demanded renewed sincerity, trust and transparency from both government officials and community representatives, arguing that past engagements were undermined by communication gaps and competing interests.

While awaiting further intervention, the coalition called for urgent implementation of the government’s urban development programme for Makoko to avert avoidable disaster, urging Governor Sanwo-Olu to ensure the clearance continues in the interest of public safety.

They also stressed the need for honesty and accountability in future arrangements, warning that previous engagements had exposed a lack of trust and communication that was exploited for interests contrary to the welfare of Makoko residents and Lagos State.

Speakers at the press conference included Nelson Ekujumi, Razaq Oladosu, Peter Oparah, Rotimi Falola, Uche Nnadozie, Elijah Ajanu, Shola Omolola, Biola Ogunsanya and Shafiu Mohammed.
