Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is set to resign from the Federal Executive Council in the coming days after informing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of his intention to contest the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State.
Adelabu disclosed his plans during a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa, where he also submitted a comprehensive performance report detailing his stewardship in the power sector over the past two and a half years.
According to a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Bolaji Tunji, the minister highlighted key milestones achieved under his leadership.
These include efforts to stabilise electricity generation, strengthen transmission infrastructure, and implement reforms aimed at improving efficiency and service delivery across the power sector value chain.
The statement noted that President Tinubu commended Adelabu for his commitment and contributions, particularly in laying a solid policy foundation for the transformation of Nigeria’s power sector.
The President also reportedly gave his consent and blessing for the minister to pursue his governorship ambition.
“In view of this development, Chief Adebayo Adelabu is expected to resign his position as Minister of Power in the coming days,” the statement read.
It added that the timing of his anticipated resignation reflects a deliberate effort to address critical challenges in the sector and ensure continuity in ongoing reforms before exiting office. These include stabilising power supply amid recent declines caused by gas supply constraints, pipeline repairs, and outstanding obligations to gas suppliers.
During the meeting, Adelabu also presented key policy frameworks, including the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP), its Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP), and the Medium-Long Term Integrated Resource Plan for the power sector.
The NIEP is designed as a long-term roadmap for achieving energy security, expanding electricity access, integrating renewable energy, and building a more resilient and efficient electricity sector.

The SIP, on the other hand, provides a detailed operational framework outlining timelines, responsibilities, and priority interventions across generation, transmission, and distribution.
Adelabu expressed gratitude to the President for his support and reaffirmed his commitment to the continued development of Nigeria’s power sector and overall national growth.
