The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed reports that he is lobbying to become the Director-General (DG) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wike, however, reaffirmed his commitment to supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, saying he does not require a formal position in the campaign council to contribute to the President’s electoral success.

The reports had listed Wike among senior party chieftains and government officials allegedly lobbying for, or being considered for, the position of DG of the APC Presidential Campaign Council.

But in a statement issued on Monday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the FCT Minister described the reports as false.

Wike said he had not discussed the leadership or membership of the Presidential Campaign Council with anyone.

According to him, he is currently outside Nigeria taking a break after spending more than 30 days commissioning projects, flagging off new projects and inspecting ongoing developments across the FCT.

“I am outside Nigeria, resting and relaxing after spending over 30 days, commissioning projects, flagging off new ones and inspecting ongoing ones, especially those scheduled for commissioning in December and January, next year,” Wike said.

He added that upon his return, his priority would remain the delivery of his mandate in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“When I return, our focus will be the continuous delivery of our mandate in line with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda and to further enhance his electoral fortune in Rivers State and the FCT,” he said.

Wike further stated that he would continue working to secure strong electoral support for Tinubu without seeking any position within the campaign council.

“Therefore, I do not need to be the DG or even member of the Presidential Campaign Council of Mr President’s political party to contribute my quota by ensuring that he wins handsomely in Rivers State and the FCT,” he said.

The denial comes as political activities and preparations for the 2027 elections intensify, with attention increasingly focused on the structure and leadership of the major parties’ campaign organisations.
