The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a drug-free and safe railway system, declaring zero tolerance for drug abuse and the trafficking of illicit substances across its train corridors and operational facilities.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the corporation, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, made the declaration in a message marking the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed globally on June 26.

Speaking on the theme, “NRC Reiterates Commitment to a Drug-Free, Safe Railway,” Opeifa described drug abuse as not only a public health challenge but also a major threat to railway safety, security and operations.

According to him, the corporation, which transports millions of passengers and critical goods across Nigeria, cannot afford the risks associated with impaired judgment caused by substance abuse.

“On the railway, a single moment of impaired judgment can have devastating consequences,” he said.

Opeifa said the NRC would continue to enforce a zero-tolerance policy against drug abuse and illicit trafficking in all train corridors, stations, workshops and operational facilities.

He disclosed that the corporation is strengthening collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigerian Railway Police Force and staff unions to prevent railway infrastructure from being used for trafficking banned and illicit substances.

The NRC boss also outlined measures being implemented to promote a drug-free railway environment, including intensified awareness campaigns, staff education and counselling programmes targeted at employees and host communities.

He encouraged members of staff battling substance abuse to seek assistance through the corporation’s confidential support channels, stressing that seeking help reflects responsibility rather than weakness.

Opeifa further urged railway workers, passengers and members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, noting that ensuring railway safety requires collective responsibility.

“As we mark this important day, let us all make the right choice: choose life over drugs and choose safety over risk,” he said.

He reaffirmed the corporation’s resolve to keep Nigeria’s railway system safe, secure and free from drugs in support of national development.
