Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has said restoring national unity and improving security would be his top priorities if elected president.
Obi made the remarks after completing the party’s screening process, where he stressed that good governance should guarantee safety, inclusion and economic relief for ordinary Nigerians.
According to him, many citizens currently live in fear and uncertainty, a situation he said must change through responsible leadership and adherence to constitutional principles.
“We want mothers to feel safe when their children go to school or work. We envision a Nigeria where people can travel across the country without fear,” Obi said.
He added, “Many Nigerians currently go to sleep uncertain about where their next meal will come from, and this situation must change.”
The former Anambra governor said national unity remains central to rebuilding trust and stability across the country, noting that the federal character principle enshrined in the Constitution must be respected to promote fairness and inclusiveness.
Obi also decried corruption and the misuse of public resources, insisting that public office should serve the collective interest rather than personal enrichment.
“We need a country where public resources are not converted into private wealth,” he stated, adding that politicians must shift focus from election calculations to addressing the hardship facing citizens.
Commenting on the NDC screening process, Obi described it as a reflection of internal democracy and transparency within the party.
“The NDC is committed to doing things right. The purpose of the screening was to ensure that candidates meet constitutional requirements and can provide the necessary documentation,” he explained.
On reports suggesting he may emerge as the party’s sole presidential candidate, Obi said no official declaration had yet been made by the party leadership.
“I do not know if anyone else has submitted an application. Until the party officially names me as the only candidate, that remains to be seen,” he added.
Obi also commended the screening committee chaired by former Ebonyi State governor, Sam Egwu, for conducting what he described as a thorough and professional exercise.
