The Federal Fire Service (FFS), FCT Command, has warned residents of the Federal Capital Territory to take precautionary measures against flooding as rainfall intensifies across the territory.

The FCT Controller, Muhammed Anas, gave the warning while urging residents, particularly those living in low-lying areas, riverbanks and communities with poor drainage systems, to remain vigilant and take necessary steps to reduce the risk of flooding.

Anas cautioned residents against activities that could worsen flooding, including dumping refuse in drains and waterways, constructing buildings on floodplains or drainage channels, blocking drainage systems and carrying out indiscriminate excavation around rivers and streams.

The Command advised residents to regularly clear drainage channels around their homes and communities and monitor weather alerts for early warnings.

Residents were also advised to avoid crossing flooded roads and waterways, keep children away from floodwaters and switch off electricity in areas affected by flooding to reduce the risk of electrocution.

In the event of flooding, the FCT Fire Service urged residents to move to higher ground and avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, warning that the depth and condition of flooded areas may be difficult to determine.

The Command further advised residents to protect vulnerable persons and valuable property and contact emergency responders whenever assistance is required.

It also cautioned residents against returning to flood-affected areas until the locations have been declared safe by the relevant authorities.

The Federal Fire Service urged residents to remain safety-conscious throughout the rainy season and cooperate with emergency agencies to minimise the impact of flooding across the FCT.
