Candidates seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions will no longer be required to repeatedly pay for the verification of their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results under a new arrangement between the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

Under the new system, candidates will pay a one-off fee of N4,000 to verify their WAEC or other O’Level results through the JAMB Verification Service platform.

Once the verification is completed, the result will be transmitted to the tertiary institution where the candidate is seeking admission, eliminating the need for individual institutions to conduct another verification of the same academic record.

JAMB and WAEC announced the arrangement in a joint statement issued on Tuesday, saying it was aimed at reducing the financial burden and administrative challenges associated with O’Level result verification.

The two organisations stressed that the N4,000 verification fee must be paid exclusively through the designated JAMB Verification Service platform and not to any tertiary institution, official or individual.

Under the arrangement, tertiary institutions are expected to rely on the verified results transmitted by JAMB when screening candidates, processing admission applications and undertaking related administrative procedures.

Consequently, institutions are not expected to impose additional charges on candidates for verifying a WAEC result that has already been processed through the JAMB platform.

The decision followed consultations between JAMB and WAEC aimed at streamlining O’Level verification and eliminating duplication in the admission process.

According to the joint statement, WAEC has authorised JAMB to transmit verification outcomes to relevant tertiary institutions for admission-related purposes.

“This arrangement is designed to ensure that candidates who have successfully verified their WASSCE O’ Level result through the Verification Service platform will not be required to repeat the same verification exercise,” the organisations said.

The bodies said the new system would also make verification more convenient, as candidates would be able to initiate and complete the process from their homes or any location with internet access.

The arrangement is expected to reduce the number of visits candidates make to tertiary institutions or JAMB-approved Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres solely to authenticate their academic credentials.

JAMB and WAEC advised candidates to complete their O’Level verification once through the approved platform and retain the verification outcome for use by their chosen institution.

The organisations said the collaboration was designed to place candidates at the centre of the admission process by reducing avoidable expenses, administrative stress and repeated verification procedures.

They added that the system would preserve the integrity and security of candidates’ academic records while strengthening coordination between Nigeria’s admission and examination authorities.
