President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with pay increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent in a move expected to boost troop morale and strengthen the country’s security operations.

The revised salary package, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit about 250,000 personnel across the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force.

A statement issued on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the review would increase the annual salary bill for the armed forces from N660 billion to N924 billion.

Under the new remuneration structure, senior officers above the rank of colonel—including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant-Generals and Generals—will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.

Officers from the rank of colonel to warrant officer will enjoy a 50 per cent pay rise, while personnel from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.

The Presidency said the decision reflects the Tinubu administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel who continue to battle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges across the country.

President Tinubu said members of the armed forces deserved greater support in recognition of their sacrifices in safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and protecting citizens.

“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.

He also reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to modernise the armed forces through sustained investment in weapons, equipment and advanced technology to improve operational effectiveness.

According to the President, security remains the foundation of national development, stressing that economic prosperity cannot be achieved without a safe and secure environment.

“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security.

We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” he said.

Tinubu urged military personnel to regard the salary increase as an expression of the government’s appreciation for their service and dedication to the country.

The salary review is expected to provide a significant boost to troop welfare as the military continues operations against insurgents, terrorists and other criminal groups across different parts of the country.
