The naira traded with relative stability against the United States dollar on Thursday, maintaining the cautious gains recorded in recent weeks as ongoing reforms by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), improved foreign exchange liquidity and renewed investor confidence continued to shape the country’s currency market.

Despite lingering pressure from import demand and global economic uncertainties, the local currency has shown resilience across the official foreign exchange market, underscoring the impact of the apex bank’s monetary tightening measures and efforts to deepen transparency in the foreign exchange system.

Official Market Reflects Relative Stability
Trading activities at the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) indicated that the naira remained largely steady, although dealers reported mild fluctuations driven by corporate demand for dollars.

The currency’s performance comes against the backdrop of the CBN’s reforms aimed at narrowing the gap between official and parallel market rates, improving liquidity and restoring investor confidence in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market.

Analysts noted that the apex bank’s interventions, including stricter monetary policies and enhanced market oversight, have helped reduce volatility that characterised the market in previous years.

Market participants said demand for foreign exchange from manufacturers, importers, airlines and other businesses remained elevated, limiting the pace of the naira’s appreciation.

Nigeria’s import-dependent economy continues to exert pressure on the domestic currency, particularly as companies seek dollars to finance raw material imports, machinery purchases and international obligations.

Traders observed that while foreign exchange supply has improved compared with earlier periods, demand still outpaces available liquidity in some segments of the market.

The fortunes of the naira remain closely tied to Nigeria’s crude oil earnings, which account for the bulk of the country’s foreign exchange inflows.

With global oil prices experiencing periodic fluctuations, economists argue that sustained increases in crude production and exports will be essential to strengthening the naira over the long term.

They also stressed that diversification of export earnings through agriculture, manufacturing and solid minerals would reduce Nigeria’s dependence on oil receipts and provide a more stable source of foreign exchange.

CBN Policies Shape Market Sentiment
Financial experts said recent policy decisions by the Central Bank, including maintaining a tight monetary stance and implementing reforms in the foreign exchange market, have contributed to improved market sentiment.

The CBN’s commitment to clearing foreign exchange backlogs and enhancing transparency has also encouraged foreign portfolio investors to return to the Nigerian market.

However, analysts warned that maintaining stability would require consistent policy implementation, stronger fiscal coordination and increased foreign direct investment.

The performance of the naira continues to have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s economy, particularly in the areas of inflation, food prices and production costs.

A weaker naira typically raises the cost of imported goods and raw materials, contributing to higher consumer prices, while a more stable currency could help moderate inflationary pressures and support economic growth.

Businesses and households are therefore closely monitoring movements in the foreign exchange market, given their impact on purchasing power and overall economic activity.

Analysts expect the naira to remain under pressure in the short term as demand for dollars persists.

Nevertheless, they believe improved oil receipts, stronger foreign capital inflows and sustained reforms by monetary authorities could support exchange rate stability in the months ahead.

The coming weeks are expected to test the resilience of the local currency as investors assess global economic trends, domestic fiscal policies and the effectiveness of ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market.
