The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed a major disruption in electricity supply across the Lagos power network following a voltage instability on the national grid on Thursday morning.

The company said the incident occurred at about 8:19 a.m. when a sudden voltage fluctuation developed within the national grid and rapidly spread across the Lagos corridor.

According to TCN, the disturbance led to the shutdown of some power generating stations, triggered transmission line outages and caused widespread electricity interruptions across Lagos and neighbouring areas.

To prevent a wider collapse of the national grid, the National Control Centre directed several power generation companies to immediately reduce their generation output to stabilise the system and manage the rising network frequency.

TCN disclosed that the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, convened an emergency meeting with senior officials of the company and the Nigerian Independent System Operator shortly after receiving reports of the incident.

The meeting focused on coordinating immediate restoration efforts and implementing measures to normalise electricity supply to the affected areas.

As part of the restoration process, TCN said the Benin–Egbin 330kV transmission line, which tripped during the disturbance, has been restored and is now transmitting bulk electricity.

The company added that engineers from its Benin and Omotoso sub-regions are working to rectify faults on the Benin–Omotoso 330kV transmission line to ensure full restoration of power supply to the Lagos network.

TCN apologised to residents, businesses and electricity consumers affected by the outage, assuring that the Ministry of Power and other stakeholders were working round the clock to restore normal bulk electricity transmission in the shortest possible time.
