The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to strengthen emergency preparedness and improve safety across the nation’s rail transport system.
The Head of Operations at NEMA, Mrs. Halima Suleiman, made the call during a working visit to the NRC at the Rigasa Railway Station in Kaduna on Saturday.
Suleiman said closer cooperation between the two organisations had become increasingly important in light of derailments and other railway-related emergencies that require swift and coordinated responses.
According to her, timely information sharing between NEMA and the NRC would significantly improve emergency response times and help reduce risks to passengers, railway personnel, and infrastructure.
She also advocated regular training programmes for railway workers in first aid and emergency response procedures, noting that frontline personnel play a critical role in managing incidents before the arrival of specialised emergency responders.
“Improved preparedness among railway staff is essential for effective emergency management and can help save lives during critical situations,” she said.

Responding, the Station Manager of Rigasa Railway Station, Mr. Kabiru Yakubu, commended the initiative and assured NEMA of the corporation’s full support.
Yakubu noted that the proposed training sessions and simulation exercises would enhance the emergency management capacity of railway personnel and contribute to safer rail operations nationwide.
Reports that the NEMA delegation also inspected operational facilities and equipment at the station as part of the visit.
Both organisations pledged to sustain their collaboration in efforts aimed at safeguarding lives, protecting property, and preserving critical railway infrastructure across the country.
