The Chairmen of Ikeja and Agege Local Government Areas have commenced plans for the reconstruction of Akin Doherty Road following a joint inspection of the deteriorating roadway, which serves as a boundary between both councils.
The inspection was led by the Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD), and his counterpart in Agege Local Government, Hon. Vinod Obasa, as part of efforts to address years of infrastructural challenges affecting residents, motorists and businesses along the corridor.

The road, located within the Guinness axis and adjoining communities, has been in a poor state for several years, resulting in persistent traffic congestion, delays in movement and economic losses for commuters and commercial operators.
According to the councils, the inspection was aimed at assessing the extent of deterioration on the road and exploring modalities for a collaborative intervention to restore the critical transport link.
Officials present during the exercise included engineers from both local governments, private engineering consultants engaged for technical assessment, the Council Manager of Agege Local Government, Chief Sogo, and other senior officials.
Speaking during the inspection, the Ikeja Council Chairman said the proposed reconstruction forms part of his administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life of residents.

“The condition of Akin Doherty Road has become a source of concern to residents, business owners, and road users. As a responsive government, we cannot continue to watch our people suffer,” Dauda said.
“This inspection marks the beginning of a strategic partnership between Ikeja and Agege Local Governments to deliver a lasting solution. We are determined to ensure that this road is reconstructed to ease movement, boost economic activities, and improve the quality of life of our people.”
Also speaking, the Chairman of Agege Local Government, Hon. Vinod Obasa, praised the growing cooperation between both councils, describing it as a practical example of how inter-governmental collaboration can accelerate development.
“This road is of immense importance to both Agege and Ikeja residents. The challenges faced by users of this road require collective action, and that is why we are here today,” Obasa stated.
“Our administration is fully committed to this partnership, and together we will ensure that Akin Doherty Road receives the attention it deserves. The welfare and convenience of our people remain our priority.”

The inspection concluded with detailed technical evaluations by engineers from both councils. Their findings and recommendations are expected to guide the scope, design and implementation of the reconstruction project.
Residents and business owners in the area have long called for government intervention on the road, citing its strategic importance to commercial activities and connectivity between Ikeja and Agege.
The planned reconstruction is expected to improve traffic flow, reduce travel time and stimulate economic activities within the affected communities once completed.
