The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has intensified safety inspections across major ferry terminals and jetties in Lagos as part of efforts to enforce compliance with waterways safety regulations and improve operational standards.

The agency disclosed that the enforcement exercise covered several terminals and jetties, including Ipakodo, Bayeku, Ijede, Ebute-Ero, Liverpool, Sabokoji, Alex, and Coconut terminals, with officials focusing on boat seaworthiness and life jacket safety compliance.

According to the Authority, a total of 120 damaged life jackets were confiscated and removed from circulation during the inspections to prevent potential risks to passengers using the state’s waterways transportation system.

LASWA stated that while many operators complied with existing safety standards, some vessels were found to require repairs and improvements before attaining full seaworthiness certification.

The Authority stressed that compliance with safety regulations remains mandatory, adding that operators are legally required to maintain seaworthy boats and provide certified, functional life jackets for all passengers.

Residents and operators were encouraged to report safety concerns through LASWA’s communication channels, including its official hotline and social media platforms.
