..Move to regulate location of gas stations nationwide

The House of Representatives has expressed concern over recurring gas explosions in the country following a blast in Apapa, Lagos State, which left five people injured.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance sponsored by Hon. Adesola Samuel Adedayo, who drew attention to the early morning explosion on May 5 along Adeleye Street in Apapa Federal Constituency.
Lawmakers said the explosion occurred at a construction site behind two shops, causing extensive damage to surrounding structures, significant financial losses, and injuries to five persons, including a student who was on his way to school.
The House commended the swift response of residents and officials of the Lagos State Fire Service, who evacuated victims to Gbagada General Hospital and other nearby medical facilities for treatment.
However, members expressed worry over what they described as a recurring pattern of gas explosions, particularly in densely populated and low-income communities.

They warned that weak enforcement of safety and siting regulations continues to expose citizens to avoidable risks.
Adopting the motion, the House mandated relevant regulatory agencies to strictly enforce existing guidelines on the location and operation of gas filling stations and related facilities nationwide.
It also directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide urgent relief materials to victims of the Apapa explosion.
Lawmakers stressed the need for stronger oversight to prevent further tragedies and safeguard lives and property across the country.
