President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned a newly constructed Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone ‘A’ office complex of the Nigeria Customs Service in Iperu, Ogun State, marking a significant step in the Service’s expansion and reform agenda.
Speaking during the ceremony held on Saturday, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, said the project was conceived to strengthen the Service’s operational capacity while improving the welfare and working conditions of its personnel.
Adeniyi explained that the relocation of the FOU became necessary due to increasing operational demands and space constraints at existing facilities in Ikeja, Lagos.
He disclosed that the newly commissioned complex is fully furnished and equipped with modern facilities to support efficient operations, including a modern armoury and a warehouse situated opposite the complex to enhance logistics and storage capacity.
“We’ve just commissioned the Federal Operations Unit; they will be moving here as soon as possible. It’s already been furnished, and the accessories required for proper functioning have been installed,” Adeniyi said.
The Customs boss commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for his support in facilitating the relocation project.
He also paid tribute to his predecessor, Hameed Ali, noting that his initial efforts were instrumental in laying the foundation for the project.
On funding, Adeniyi revealed that the project was initially estimated at ₦73 billion but noted that prevailing economic conditions may necessitate a cost review.
He further disclosed that the Service has commenced operations at the nearby cargo airport, which was also commissioned the same day, with Customs officers already involved in terminal activities and cargo handling.

“We’re already at the airport. Our officers performed tallying when Mr President witnessed the offloading of the first cargo. The facilities have been provided for us,” he added.
The expansive project site is expected to host about 142 buildings, including a training college, multipurpose halls, and a sports complex, underscoring the Service’s long-term commitment to modernisation, efficiency, and institutional growth.
