Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has unveiled plans to upgrade Rufus Giwa Polytechnic to a full-fledged university, describing the move as a strategic step to position Ondo State at the forefront of national development in agriculture, science, and technology.

The governor made this known on Monday while receiving a report from a committee proposing the institution’s transformation into the University of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Owo (UNASTO) at his office in Akure.

Aiyedatiwa commended the committee for what he described as a comprehensive and forward-looking submission, which included a campus master plan, academic framework, five-year sustainability strategy, and take-off grant projections.

“This work reflects a clear vision and meticulous planning,” the governor said. “The calibre of experts involved and the research conducted leave no doubt that this university can become one of the best in Nigeria.”

He emphasised that the proposed institution aligns with national priorities in agriculture, rural development, electrification, and water resources, stressing the critical role of innovation in driving growth.

“Artificial intelligence and technology will drive higher agricultural yields and sustainable rural livelihoods. Science and technology must underpin everything we do, including food production and wealth creation,” he added.

The governor also called for careful management of the transition process to ensure that current students of the polytechnic are not adversely affected.

He urged swift implementation of the proposal to establish a competitive and globally relevant institution.

Presenting the report, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Igbekele Ajibefun, said the upgrade is aimed at meeting the aspirations of a growing youth population seeking university education.

He noted that the proposed university would combine technical expertise with strong academic foundations to prepare students for a competitive global environment.

Ajibefun explained that the institution would feature faculties spanning agriculture, health sciences, engineering, environmental studies, computing, and social sciences, among others.

He added that a detailed master plan had been developed in line with requirements of the National Universities Commission.

According to him, a five-year strategic development plan has also been outlined to ensure financial sustainability, incorporating government support and internally generated revenue while maintaining affordability for students.

He further disclosed that a draft enabling law for the institution has been prepared and would require minor amendments for formal approval.
