At least 23 people have been confirmed dead, and 108 others sustained varying degrees of injuries following multiple suicide bombings in Maiduguri on Monday evening, according to Borno State Police Command.
The attacks targeted crowded locations, including the city’s largest market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover area. Explosions rocked the city, causing widespread panic among residents.
Police Public Relations Officer Nahum Daso confirmed the casualty figures in a statement on Tuesday morning.
He said, “Preliminary investigations reveal that suspected suicide bombers carried out the incidents. Regrettably, a total of 23 persons lost their lives, while 108 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.”

Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), promptly evacuated the injured to medical facilities.
The scenes were secured and subjected to thorough sweeps by the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit to prevent further threats.
The Joint Task Force (North East) Operation Hadin Kai described the attacks as cowardly acts by Boko Haram terrorists intended to create mass panic.
In a statement, Sani Uba said the security forces responded immediately to secure the affected areas and are intensifying surveillance, patrols, and counter-IED measures across the metropolis.
“The cowardly attacks targeted crowded public areas to inflict mass casualties and create panic within the metropolis,” he said.
“We urge the public to remain calm but vigilant, avoid crowded areas where possible, and promptly report any suspicious persons, unattended items, or unusual activities to the nearest security agency.”
Authorities assured residents that all security agencies remain fully committed to safeguarding lives and property while relentlessly pursuing the terrorists responsible for the attacks.
